ADAPT Features at the 2023 European Association of Research Managers and Administrators’ Conference in Prague

12 May 2023

The European Association of Research Managers and Administrators’ Conference (EARMA) returned in person this year with a conference held in Prague, Czechia. This year’s conference saw substantial ADAPT contributions over the three day event representing the team of exceptional Research Managers and Administrators within ADAPT.

EARMA represents the community of Research Managers and Administrators (RMAs) in Europe. They work with the EU Commission, national and international funding agencies, providing a networking forum, a learning platform, and a place to share experiences and best practice among RMAs throughout EARMA and in the wider RMA community in a myriad of sectors, including a variety of exceptional contributions from our own ADAPT members who attend the event.

John Judge (ADAPT’s Head of Research Development), presented at the Pecha Kucha Session on Widening Topics with a talk titled “Looking Over The Fence For WIDENING Success”. This presentation, co-authored by Christian Bonnici (LT-Bridge), focussed on TWINNING projects under the EC’s WIDENING programme bringing together research active partners in developed countries to boost research outcomes from WIDENING partners combining scientific expertise and RMA best practice, as a case study.

Laura Grehan (ADAPT’s Head of Education and Public Engagement), spoke at the Pecha Kucha Session on Open Science & Responsible Research & Innovation with her talk “Delivering Excellence in Public Engagement”. This talk explored what it takes to build and deliver an award-winning education and public engagement (EPE) programme. Laura Grehan discussed the recommendations from ADAPT’s “Outstanding” international review performance and the vast experience of the ADAPT EPE team, who recently won a Dublin City University President’s Staff Recognition Award.

Anne Kearns (Previously: SFI Discover Project Coordinator), continued the Pecha Kucha Session on Open Science & Responsible Research & Innovation with her talk “We need to talk about AI”. Using ADAPTs Citizens’ Think-Ins’, Anne Kearns presented a model of citizen-researcher dialogue in which stakeholders can explore collaboratively the potential opportunities, challenges and benefits of emerging STEM innovations through a lens of ethics, trust and privacy. Launched in 2019, ADAPTs Think-Ins have engaged more than 500 citizens and 120 researchers in dialogue around the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our lives.

Emma Clarke (Education & Public Engagement Officer) and the EPE Team, including Cara Greene (Research Outreach Coordinator), presented on the topic “Getting Started With Logic Models”. In this interactive session, Emma Clarke and Cara Greene focussed on best practice in logic modelling to introduce the concept and, using case studies and examples, illustrated the concepts embedded in a logic model.
