AI-generated art tools like DALL-E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are changing how we view art and creativity. But as humans, how good are we at distinguishing a classic from an artwork generated by a machine?
The ‘Art or AI?’ Museum of Very Modern Art will have you scratching your head to figure out your Dalís from your DALL-Es. Browse the gallery. Ask yourself is this machine art or a Monet masterpiece. Note your answers and check your scores.
At the AI Dilemma Café we will be exchanging coffee for chats about people’s interactions with AI. Our AI dilemmas will encourage you to think about the technology you interact with on a day-to-day basis and how it shapes our lives and our interactions with others.
There will also be pop-up talks on ADAPT’s Artificial Intelligence research throughout the evening. Full programme coming soon!
What happens to your body when you trick your mind into thinking you’re moving while sitting still and wearing a VR visor? From virtual to reality… and back! invites you to immerse yourself in a virtual world and experience it for yourself!
Experience what it feels like to embody a virtual avatar by wearing an IVR visor. This avatar may have different somatic features (skin color, clothes, body shape) or it can perform different actions (moving while the person is sitting) and this illusion can trigger subjective (having the feeling of moving) or physiological (changes in heart rate) effects.
Enter a world where your face becomes data. This interactive art installation offers a striking visualisation of how facial recognition systems operate. As you step into the Douglas Hyde Gallery, an image of your face will be captured in real-time.
Though no data is collected, this experience invites you to explore the fine line between innovation, surveillance and personal privacy, prompting reflection on the role of technology and identity in the digital age.

To celebrate START and European Researchers’ Night 2024, the eSTÓR team will present “Unlocking Irish Language Data for Improved Irish Language Tools.”
Many digital platforms (virtual assistants, search engines, translation tools, etc.) rely on language technology. However, limited Irish language support forces speakers to switch to English, risking digital extinction. This language switch undermines efforts to promote Irish through increased speakers alone.
eSTÓR sources high-quality Irish data to bridge this gap and advance Irish language technology.
Visit the eSTÓR stand at #ExploreAI to see these advances in action!
Join us at European Researchers’ Night for a fun-filled evening of discovery!
Kids, parents, and everyone curious are invited to explore the amazing world of artificial intelligence through interactive puzzles and activities.
Learn cool facts, and meet real scientists who will guide you along the way. It’s an exciting night where learning becomes an adventure for the whole family!
In the fast changing world of social media, should people be held accountable for what they post and share online?
Join the VIGILANT project team to explore the topic of mis- and dis-information in Ireland, both online and offline. We’ll be tackling the big questions like:
– How confident do you feel when it comes to identifying what is disinformation?
– Should the gardaí be able to monitor and remove disinformation to prevent criminal activities?
– What is the line between freedom to post online and being held accountable for what you share?
We think everyone should be able to participate in science from the comfort of your own home. That’s why we developed Neureka, a smartphone app that takes research out of the lab and into your smartphone. We use innovative methods such real-time mood tracking and gamified tasks to advance our mission of better understanding brain health.
To help us with this mission, join us at European Researchers Night this September where we will bring the Neureka app to life through real-life mock-ups of the tasks, describe our current research and what we plan to do next.
Approximately 5000 people in Ireland use Irish Sign Language (ISL) as their first language. ISL is a full and complex language with its own grammar, syntax and structure. But there are sometimes gaps in the vocabulary of ISL when it comes to technical subjects like Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
To tackle this problem, Deaf Community representatives, academics from Dublin City University and other professionals came together in 2018 to build an Irish Sign Language STEM Glossary. Join us on Researchers Night to explore different scientific topics, presented in Irish Sign Language (with English captions).
Participants will be asked “How did Google Translate/Bing Translator/ChatGPT/etc translate this?”.
While we do have technology that can translate the Irish language, that doesn’t automatically mean they are perfect. The point can be made about the importance of researchers doing work to constantly improve this technology and that, even with Irish being a minority language, its speakers still deserve fully functional language technology and that is an important part of avoiding digital extinction.
Come meet Teresa at Researchers’ Night and put your linguistic skills to the test!
Join an ISL-interpreted tour of #ExploreAI at 5:30pm.
The tour meets at the main entrance of Douglas Hyde Gallery in TCD at 5:30pm for a 45 minute tour of the #ExploreAI exhibit including interactive virtual reality exhibitions and pop-up talks in the AI Dilemma Café. The exhibit includes the Irish Sign Language STEM Glossary project. Join the team to explore different scientific topics, presented in Irish Sign Language (ISL) with English captions.
ALGOWATCH focuses on algorithmic literacy and disinformation. It has two main goals: highlighting the threat that algorithmic disinformation has on democracy and supporting media literacy professionals. Algowatch does this by addressing new disinformation forms, engaging participants through games and events, training mediators like teachers and journalists, and disseminating knowledge through innovative strategies.
Join Algowatch at #ExploreAI to try out interactive games and quizzes that develop digital skills and critical thinking about the benefits and challenges of accessing online information about topics like climate; health and well-being and democracy.
– Can ChatGPT speak Irish with you? – Do you think Facial Recognition Technology should be used by the Gardaí in Ireland? – Is dynamic pricing here to stay? – How would we like AI to be portrayed in images?
Our AI dilemmas will encourage you to think about the technology you interact with on a day-to-day basis and how it shapes our lives and our interactions with others. There will also be pop-up talks on ADAPT’s Artificial Intelligence research throughout the evening.
