The European Language Data Space (LDS) and the eSTÓR project in the ADAPT Centre in Dublin City University (DCU) are bringing together experts from industry, public administration, and research to discuss the importance of language data for developing language technologies (LT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based tools in Ireland. The event takes place on Wednesday 4th November in the Dexcom Stadium in Galway.
This is Ireland’s second time hosting an LDS workshop. The workshop brings the language technology community to Galway this week where many of the participants will also attend the collocated international conference ‘The future of language technologies in the age of artificial intelligence – Safeguarding linguistic diversity and digital sovereignty.’
Since 2023, the European Commission has been investing guidance and support towards establishing Common European Language Spaces. The Language Data Space allows for communication and exchange of data, of all modalities and languages, to provide a new dimension in language data sharing for all European countries. The objective of the LDS is to build a trustworthy and effective data market for the exchange of language resources in the public and – even more importantly – in the private sector, in line with the EU Data Strategy.
To promote this initiative, a series of workshops have been organised across Europe to support local industries, research groups and public administrations interested in integrating this new language data exchange space. The workshops also offer an opportunity to connect with relevant local and European networks, and promote and support the existing reliable infrastructures.
The latest Irish LDS workshop will address needs of European stakeholders from both private and public sectors, be it providers, developers and/or consumers of language data, through talks and panels focusing on the experiences and requirements of these stakeholders, and exploring relevant questions for the procurement and sharing of language data. By supporting efforts to produce, monetise, and obtain language data to power Language Technologies (LTs) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based tools for English and Irish, the LDS can help European and Irish stakeholders to meet the desired technological growth, and enhance their competitiveness in a multilingual Europe where LTs and AI-based applications play an increasingly important role.
