Professor Aphra Kerr (University College Dublin) recently delivered a lecture on ‘Gamemakers: Precarity, Networking and Solidarity’ as part of the week long Games Culture masterclass held at the Ritsumeikan Center for Game Studies (RCGS), part of the Graduate School of Core Ethics and Frontier Sciences at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan. The event was supported by the Game Creator Support Project of the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan.
Hosted by Dr. Martin Roth, author of Unboxing Japanese Videogames (MIT Press), and Dr. Siyu Yang, the masterclass brought together graduate students from Japan, China and South Korea, alongside academics from Australia, China, South Korea and the United Kingdom.
The programme featured a series of talks and discussions exploring games culture from diverse international perspectives. Other speakers included Tae-Jin Yoon (South Korea), Felania Liu (China), James Manning (Australia), and James Newman (UK).
Participants exchanged ideas and perspectives on contemporary game studies, highlighting the value of cross-cultural dialogue in the field.
