Research in Action: Three Innovations for Security

14 April 2026

At ADAPT, research moves beyond the lab to address urgent real-world challenges. The projects featured here show how AI and digital innovation can strengthen inclusion, protect critical infrastructure, and support safer online environments.

TiLT is a digital role-play platform that uses story-based simulations to help organisations build empathy, practise inclusive interactions, and create measurable culture change. Its approach combines perspective-taking, decision-based learning, and anonymous progress tracking so both individuals and organisations can better understand behaviour, bias, and inclusion in workplace settings. https://tiltroleplay.com/

Sea-Scan is an ADAPT project exploring how existing subsea fibre-optic cables can be transformed into a large-scale sensing network for maritime monitoring. By combining distributed acoustic sensing with machine learning, the project aims to detect vessel activity in real time, strengthen maritime awareness, and help protect the critical digital infrastructure that underpins Ireland’s economy and connectivity. https://www.seascan.ie

VIGILANT is a Horizon Europe project developing ethical-by-design tools, training, and knowledge-sharing approaches to help police authorities counter illegal disinformation linked to criminal activity. Bringing together researchers, industry experts, and law-enforcement partners, it aims to improve the monitoring, detection, analysis, and investigation of harmful online content while supporting a more coordinated European response. https://www.vigilantproject.eu/
