Professor Declan O’Sullivan Appointed to Ireland’s Open Data Governance Board

ADAPT Principle Investigator and Professor in Computer Science at the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin, Professor Declan O’Sullivan, has been appointed to Ireland’s Open Data Governance Board (ODGB).   The Open Data Governance Board (ODGB) was established by the Irish Government to provide strategic leadership and governance in line with best international practice in the area of Open Data (https://data.gov.ie/pages/opendatagovernanceboard).

Over the past decade, Professor O’Sullivan and his colleagues within ADAPT have developed significant experience in collaborating with Ordnance Survey Ireland and the Central Statistics Office on projects to support publication of Open Data through Linked Data and Semantic Web technologies.

The OGDB is tasked with considering and making recommendations to Government as to how to improve the capacity and capability of public bodies in implementing Open Data, and considering opportunities to maximise the value of public sector data and information for long-term economic, social and democratic benefits.

One such initiative is http://data.gov.ie which brings these datasets together in a single searchable website. The portal is operated by the Government Reform Unit of the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform.

The current membership of the ODGB is available online at https://data.gov.ie/pages/open-data-governance-board-membership
