Prof. Jane Ohlmeyer will discuss the lived experiences of women in early modern Dublin during the annual Sir John T. Gilbert Commemorative Lecture, hosted by the Dublin City Library and Archive on May 29th in the Dublin City Library and Archive Conference Room.
Focusing on seventeenth-century Dublin, this lecture will reveal some initial findings from Prof. Ohlmeyer’s European Research Council project, VOICES, which explores the lived experiences of women in early modern Ireland. Utilising a substantial collection of digital data, the lecture will address the role of Dublin women in a society undergoing significant economic, political, and cultural changes. It is evident that women had a central and diverse role in daily life, particularly in the economy at all levels. Through kinship, marriage, and fosterage connections, women were the social glue binding families and communities. Despite facing legal restrictions and patriarchal norms, women’s lives were intricately linked to the stories of land and property.
