Precision ALS' Dr Deirdre Murray Receives International Recognition for Work in ALS/MND Care and Research

13 February 2024

We are pleased to announce that the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations has awarded our own Dr Deirdre Murray with the Allied Health Professional Award for 2023. Dr Murray’s “unparalleled commitment to enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with ALS/MND”, and her “extensive work as a thought leader in advancing clinical and care management” were cited by the Alliance as reasons she was chosen for the award. The award was presented to Dr Murray on the 4th of December during the ALS/MND Symposium in Basel, Switzerland.

Dr Deirdre Murray is an Assistant Professor in Trinity College Dublin, and a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist in Motor Neurone Disease at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, and is centrally involved with Work Package 4 of Precision ALS which focuses on digital outcome measures and remote monitoring.

Contributions Dr Murray has made throughout her impressive career include contributing to the “HSCP Deliver: Strategic Guidance Framework for Health and Social Care Professions 2021-2026” in Ireland, developing the Irish Guidelines for The Physiotherapy Management of Motor Neuron Disease, and co-founding an international ALS/MND physiotherapy and occupational therapist networking group.

Dr Murray also had a pivotal role in carrying out the REVEALS study, a pan-European initiative led by Precision ALS Principal Investigator, Prof Orla Hardiman. REVEALS included participants from six research centres across Europe and helped to characterise the relationship between respiratory function and real-life symptoms in ALS.

Dr Murray’s commitment to advancing both the understanding and level of care of MND, both in Ireland and internationally, are clear to see from her outstanding career. Congratulations on your well-deserved award, Deirdre!
