Machine Learning Meetup at Sandbox VR for Dublin Tech Week

09 June 2025

Dublin Tech Week got off to a strong start this summer as the ML Dublin community came together for a sold-out meetup on Next Generation Immersive Media. The exclusive event, hosted by Huawei Research Ireland, took place at Sandbox VR’s new venue on Nassau Street where they offer futuristic VR experiences for individuals and groups.

Attendees were treated to presentations from two leading figures in the immersive tech space. Professor Rachel McDonnell of Trinity College Dublin, who heads the Graphics and Visualisation group and is a member of the ADAPT Centre, delivered a talk and Huawei’s Principal Game Engine Architect, Tobias Franke, followed with insights into his team’s ongoing research.

The venue, equipped with state-of-the-art motion capture, haptics, and interactive media technology, served as a fitting backdrop for discussions on the future of immersive media. Guests enjoyed complimentary drinks, including cocktails served by a robotic bartender, and a lucky few were selected to participate in a free multiplayer VR game from among Sandbox VR’s nine immersive titles.

This month’s meetup marked a highlight of Dublin Tech Week and as with past ML Dublin events, the evening provided a prime opportunity for networking and knowledge-sharing among AI researchers, developers, and tech enthusiasts.
