Future and Reality of Gaming Conference (FROG) | Vienna Games Conference


FROG – Future and Reality of Gaming 2023, the 17th Vienna Games Conference, will be taking place Friday, 13 – Sunday, 15 October 2023. The conference will be a hybrid event with in person proceedings taking place in Vienna City Hall. FROG 2023 invites academic discourse on the subject of games and play through this year’s theme “Money & Games”. This year, the conference addresses issues of “Money & Games” in the field of play and games and invites game scholars, creators, youth workers, activists and enthusiasts from around the globe to come together and “follow the money” by discussing the traces it leaves on this field.

ADAPT Academic Dr. Aphra Kerr (Maynooth University) will be delivering the keynote for this conference exploring the value of digital games. Her lecture is titled “Making and Banking Value in Digital Games”. The abstract for this talk is available here.

Dr. Aphra Kerr is a Professor in Sociology at Maynooth University in Ireland and holds a PhD in Communication Studies (DCU, 2000). She is a PI at the Science Foundation Ireland funded ADAPT Centre for Digital Content Technology, a multi-institutional national research centre (2021-2027). Her books include Global Games: Production, Circulation and Policy in the Networked Age, Routledge, 2017. In 2020 she was elected to the Academy of Europe and in 2016 she received a Distinguished Scholar award from the international Digital Games Research Association (DiGRA). She is an external expert advisor to the Pan European Games Information system (PEGI).
