Dr Abeba Birhane of Trinity College Dublin has been named the recipient of the Inspiration Award at the Diversity Inclusion Tech Awards 2026, in recognition of her pioneering contributions to AI ethics, accountability, and equity in technology.
The award was presented by Daniel Donleavy of Dublin Tech Summit, who praised Dr Birhane as a leading voice in artificial intelligence whose research and commitment to challenging how society understands technology continue to inspire the next generation.
Now in its ninth year, the Diversity Inclusion Tech Awards celebrates individuals and organisations advancing diversity, inclusion and equality across Ireland’s technology sector. The awards attract hundreds of nominations from across Europe, the United States and the UAE, recognising initiatives that create more inclusive workplaces and expand access to opportunities throughout the industry. This year’s ceremony, hosted by journalist Elaine Burke, brought together technology leaders, companies and diversity advocates from Ireland and beyond.
Abeba is an Assistant Professor of AI at Trinity College Dublin and founder and director of the AI Accountability Lab (AIAL) at ADAPT and Trinity College Dublin. Her internationally recognised research on algorithmic bias, AI accountability and ethical machine learning has helped shape global policy discussions and strengthen calls for greater transparency and fairness in artificial intelligence systems.
In her acceptance remarks, Abeba highlighted the growing gap between public perceptions of AI and the technology’s actual capabilities. She argued that the AI industry often “thrives in hype”, pointing to recent reports of AI systems allegedly acting beyond human control as examples of how sensational narratives can overshadow a more nuanced understanding of how these systems operate.
The Inspiration Award recognises transformative leadership that extends beyond individual achievement to drive meaningful societal change. Through her research, advocacy and public engagement, Abeba continues to influence global conversations on responsible AI while championing greater equity across the technology ecosystem.
