CCMI Bureau Visits Trinity’s AI Accountability Lab to Discuss AI and Sustainability

22 June 2026

The bureau of the Consultative Commission on Industrial Change (CCMI) recently visited the Artificial Intelligence Accountability Lab (AIAL) at Trinity College Dublin and the ADAPT Centre to explore the societal impacts and sustainability challenges associated with artificial intelligence.

The CCMI is a section of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), the European Union’s advisory body representing organised civil society. The CCMI focuses on sectoral industrial issues and develops opinions on topics related to sustainability, innovation and industrial change.

This year, the bureau is examining the relationship between AI and water usage. The visit to AIAL provided an opportunity for discussion and expert insight, contributing to the bureau’s ongoing work and policy recommendations in this area.

Founded and led by Dr. Abeba Birhane, Trinity College Dublin’s AIAL Lab studies AI technologies and their societal impacts. The lab’s research aims to strengthen accountability across the AI ecosystem, from research and product development to governance and regulation.

AIAL’s work focuses on ensuring that AI systems and policies serve the public interest, with particular attention to the needs and experiences of marginalised and underrepresented communities.
