Algowatch at Dublin Maker 2025: Playing with AI Literacy

05 September 2025

Last Sat, August 30th, at Dublin Maker 2025, Algowatch pulled curious minds into the world of algorithms and AI with its game Eunopia: Mission AI. Starting from the European digital competence framework and co-created with 100 Irish teenagers, the free, web-based game challenges players to evaluate rumours, sharpen their critical thinking, and learn how algorithms and AI shape the information they encounter.

Around 350 visitors of all ages stopped by Algowatch’s stand to play and ask questions about the mechanics of algorithms. The event team on the day included Prof. Aphra Kerr (UCD) and Yuening Li (UCD), Faebitha Rahiman (UCD) and Cliona Sheridan (DCU).

Prof. Aphra Kerr (UCD) is the Irish PI of Algowatch which is part of the Research Ireland ADAPT Centre and funded under the European Commission’s Creative Europe programme. Led by Savoir Devenir in Paris and with partners in Portugal and Croatia the project focuses on educating the general public and key intermediaries including teachers, librarians and media professionals to take control of algorithms and Artificial Intelligence and to be aware of mis and disinformation.

The Irish research research team consisting of Jean Finley (developer), Faebitha Rahiman (writer), Yekta Kalanta Harmozi (graphics) and Aphra Kerr developed and produced the game which is now available to play for free in four languages on the algowatch website at https://algowatch.eu/resources/game/

The French team led on developing interactive quizzes which are also available now on the project website at https://algowatch.eu/resources/

A toolkit is now available to download for teachers, librarians and others. The toolkit contains powerpoint slides, posters and suggested workshop formats. See  https://algowatch.eu/resources/toolkit/

Algowatch is coming to an end in September 2025 but will be hosting an exhibition and workshops in Portlaoise public library from 22-24th of September and will be part of ADAPTs exhibition and events at European Researcher’s Night in TCD on Friday the 26th of September.
