AI Literacy Workshop for Limerick Teachers Focused on Unlocking AI’s Potential in Education

Post-primary teachers across Limerick and surrounding recently attended  a free, interactive workshop designed to empower educators with the knowledge and skills to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their classrooms.

Organised by ADAPT, the Research Ireland Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology, and Dublin City University (DCU), with support from Google, the AI Literacy in the Classroom initiative is equipping teachers with essential skills to navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape in education.  The half-day in-person workshop as delivered by an internationally recognised team and took place on Saturday 24th of January in the Limerick Educational Support Centre.

The aims of the interactive workshop included:

  • Enhance educators’ understanding of foundational AI concepts.
  • Explore the ethical and social implications of AI use in schools.
  • Provide practical strategies for integrating AI into teaching and policy-making.

 

The workshop was designed to empower teachers across all subjects to support students in using artificial intelligence responsibly, ethically, and effectively, with a strong focus on critical thinking and evaluation of AI-generated content.  Importantly, the session was open to all post-primary educators, regardless of prior experience or knowledge of computer science or AI.

The training is led by nationally recognised experts from ADAPT and Dublin City University, including:

  • Dr Eileen Culloty, Deputy Director, DCU Institute for Media, Democracy and Society (FuJo), and Vice Chair of Media Literacy Ireland
  • Dr Michał Wieczorek, Assistant Professor, UCD School of Education, specialising in the ethical impact of AI in primary and secondary education
  • Dr Eamon Costello, Associate Professor of Digital Learning at DCU and President of the Irish Learning Technology Association

 

The initiative aligns with current AI education policy and emerging AI training provision from the Department of Education.  Participants receive a certificate of attendance, along with morning refreshments and lunch.
