AI Accountability Lab Awarded €199,978 Grant to Advance Justice-Oriented AI Auditing

25 June 2025

The Artificial Intelligence Accountability Lab (AIAL) in the ADAPT Research Ireland Centre at the School of Computer Science and Statistics in Trinity College Dublin has been awarded €199,978 by the European AI & Society Fund as part of its AI Accountability Grants programme. This funding supports AIAL’s mission to develop a justice-oriented audit framework that integrates computational methods, theories of justice, and existing regulations to enhance accountability in AI systems.

The grant is part of the Fund’s €4 million “Making Regulation Work” programme, which aims to support civil society organisations in challenging AI harms and holding governments, employers, and tech companies accountable for the misuse of AI in Europe.  AIAL is among 15 grantees selected from over 300 proposals across Europe, reflecting a diverse and cross-sectoral approach to AI accountability.

Under the leadership of Dr. Abeba Birhane, AIAL focuses on ensuring that AI research, product development, and regulation centre on public interest, particularly the voices of marginalised and disenfranchised communities. The lab’s work is instrumental in shaping AI technologies that extend justice, equity, and fundamental rights.

This grant will enable AIAL to further its research and contribute to the development of robust AI auditing practices that are grounded in social justice and regulatory frameworks.
