The Age-Friendly AI initiative was recently featured at the DARIAH Annual Event 2026 in Rome, where researchers presented The Spirit of Radio, an innovative demonstration designed to bring AI into the physical world through a vintage-style radio developed in collaboration with older adults.
The project aligned closely with this year’s DARIAH theme, “Building Infrastructures of Engagement”, by creating accessible and familiar entry points for conversations about artificial intelligence among groups that are often underrepresented in discussions about emerging technologies.
Age-Friendly AI is a national initiative led by TU Dublin and the ADAPT Centre, supported by a broad network of organisations focussed on ageing and lifelong learning. The programme was developed in partnership with older adults and leading ageing-focused organisations across Ireland.
The programme builds on a year-long public dialogue that explores older people’s hopes, concerns, and expectations regarding AI and its role in everyday life. Alongside the training programme, a suite of resources for librarians and educators has been developed to support AI literacy and lifelong learning within communities nationwide.
The presentation in Rome highlights how co-designed approaches can help make AI more accessible, relevant, and inclusive for older adults.
