From That Small Island, the ambitious documentary charting the story of the Irish at home and across a global diaspora, has won the Outstanding International Documentary Award at the Newport Beach International Film Festival, following its North American premiere.
The film features contributions from several Trinity academics, including Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, who took part as one of the expert commentators and also leads the ERC Advanced Grant–funded VOICES Project, which informs elements of the research drawn on in the production.
Narrated by Colin Farrell and filmed across 17 countries, the documentary and its four-part series combine historical scholarship with recent scientific discoveries. After its U.S. festival debut, it screened in Chicago, New York and Boston, followed by further showings in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Dubai and Doha. It has been an official selection at major festivals including Galway, The Hague and ARFF//Berlin.
The television series aired on RTÉ in June, is available on the RTÉ Player, and continues to see strong international uptake, including a broadcast slot on WORLD, the public television nonfiction channel.
