ADAPT Spin-out, Akara, Makes Time Magazine’s “Best Inventions of 2025”

21 October 2025

Akara, a spin-out from Trinity College Dublin and ADAPT, has had its AI sensor selected for Time Magazine’s “Best Inventions of 2025” list.  This is the second time Akara has earned placement on the list, having first been included in 2019 for its socially assistive robot, Stevie.

Akara’s AI sensor operates as a real-time “air traffic controller” in operating rooms: coordinating staff, tracking surgical events, issuing alerts, and optimising scheduling.  It works alongside Violet, Akara’s clinical-grade, autonomous UV disinfection robot, to improve workflow efficiency and reduce downtime in hospitals.  Institutions such as Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles are already deploying the technology.

Speaking about the recognition, Niamh Donnelly, Akara co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Niamh Donnelly, said: “It feels incredible for our technology to be recognised alongside global names like Nvidia, Apple, and Anthropic — especially in an era of such intense innovation,” said Niamh Donnelly, Akara co-founder and Chief Technology Officer.

Akara’s journey began within ADAPT’s research ecosystem.  The company emerged as a spin-out from Trinity’s School of Engineering and the ADAPT Centre, leveraging foundational work in AI, human-centred design, and robotics. Over time, Akara has matured into a healthcare technology innovator with global reach.

In addition to its inclusion in Time’s 2025 list, Akara has accumulated a strong track record of recognition and growth.  Recognitions include:

Akara’s inclusion on the Time list alongside global technology leaders underscores the strength of its innovation and the promise of its solutions in transforming hospital operations.

We extend our congratulations to the Akara team and look forward to watching their continued impact in healthcare and beyond.
