ADAPT Researchers Help Shape AI Policy in Ireland and Europe

ADAPT Centre researchers have made expert contributions to major consultations shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI) policy at both European and Irish national levels. The contributions reflect integrated technical and legal expertise assembled in ADAPT and Horizon Europe Project FORSEE and HARNESS, and focus on the use of open knowledge for regulatory technology solutions.   The team developing these contributions included Professor Dave Lewis, Dr Marta Lasek-Markey, Dr Delaram Golpayegani, Dr Beyza Yaman, Professor Diedre Ahern of Trinity College Dublin and Dr. Harshvardhan J Pandit and Dr. Julio Hernandez of Dublin City University and benefited from inter-disiplinary feedback from across the Centre.

Apply AI – Shaping European AI Strategy

Submitting to the European Commission’s Apply AI  consultations on an AI Strategy for industrial use and public services, the team which included Professor Dave Lewis, Dr Marta Lasek-Markey, and Dr Delaram Golpayegani of Trinity College Dublin and Dr. Harshvardhan J Pandit and Dr. Julio Hernandez of Dublin City University.  While supporting the goals of the EU AI Act, the first transnational AI regulation, they highlighted potential enforcement challenges and emphasised the need for flexible and ongoing regulatory learning supported by FAIR data and data space policy implementation.  Read the submission here> 

Responsible AI in Science

In response to a separate consultation on AI in science, ADAPT researchers submitted recommendations titled Responsible AI in Research Assessment: Aligning Research Practices with FRIA under the AI Act.  Their input addressed the growing impact of AI, particularly large language models, on responsible research assessment. The submission focused on aligning research practices with values like accountability and transparency, and on meeting potential obligations such as Fundamental Rights Impact Assessments (FRIA) under the AI Act.  Read the submission here>

Influencing Irish AI Act Implementation

At a national level, ADAPT researchers provided expert feedback on the Irish Department of Enterprise, Trade, and Employment (DETE) consultation on implementing the AI Act in Ireland.  The submission focused on ensuring that human rights and ethical considerations are central to Ireland’s approach to AI governance.  The submission was published as part of DETE’s compilation of responses.
