ADAPT DCU's Dr Joss Moorkens Delivers Lecture on Machine Translation for Harvard Medical School

12 June 2025

Dr Joss Moorkens, Associate Professor at the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University (DCU) as well as a Funded Investigator and Science Lead at the ADAPT Centre, delivered a lecture on the evaluation of machine translation for Harvard Medical School on the 6th of May. The talk was part of the Clinical Informatics Lecture Series, a collaborative initiative involving Harvard Medical School, Boston Children’s Hospital, Mass General Brigham, and Beth Israel Lahey Health.

The presentation forms part of an ongoing collaboration with the Clinical Informatics group at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital. Together, they are investigating the quality of automatic translation of paediatric patient instructions using large language models. The collaboration aims to address healthcare disparities faced by non-English speaking families across the United States, who often encounter delays due to limited access to translated materials. With multilingual service budgets in the US increasingly under pressure, the potential of machine translation to bridge communication gaps and improve patient outcomes has become even more important.

More information on the lecture series is available at Harvard Medical School’s website.
