The Routledge Handbook of Translation Technology and Society, edited by Stefan Baumgarten and Michael Tieber of the University of Graz, was recently published and features a contribution from ADAPT co-founder Prof. Andy Way. His chapter appears alongside work by several other researchers who have been part of the ADAPT and DCU Machine Translation team, including Eva Vanmassenhove, Dimitar Shterionov, Lynne Bowker, Ana Guerberof, and Félix do Carmo, as well as DCU colleagues Dorothy Kenny and Dr Khetam Al Sharou.
The handbook calls for a comprehensive examination of traditional approaches to translation. It critically explores the ethical, social, economic and environmental implications of digital translation practices such as machine translation, crowdsourcing and platform-based work. Addressing issues like language inequality, data colonialism and the changing nature of translation labour, it offers essential insights for researchers, professionals and policymakers in translation studies and related fields.
