ADAPT and Trinity College Dublin Research Projects Showcased in Library Exhibition

Two innovative ADAPT and Trinity College Dublin research projects are currently featured in a public display outside the Eavan Boland Library, highlighting cutting-edge work addressing digital security and maritime surveillance challenges.

One of the projects, InvizCrypt, is led by Professor Hitesh Tewari of Trinity’s School of Computer Science and Statistics and ADAPT. The cloud collaboration platform has been developed to enable users to work together on sensitive documents while preventing the platform provider from accessing or reading the content. As European governments and institutions seek to reduce dependence on large technology providers and strengthen data sovereignty, InvizCrypt aims to give users greater control over the security and privacy of their information.

Also on display is Sea-Scan, a project led by Professor Marco Ruffini of Trinity’s School of Computer Science and Statistics and Dr John Kennedy of the School of Engineering. Sea-Scan is developing advanced real-time vessel detection technology by using existing subsea fibre-optic telecommunications cables as a vast sensing network. Through Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), the system analyses subtle changes in light signals within the cables to detect vibrations in the water and seabed.

Combining this sensing capability with artificial intelligence and machine learning, Sea-Scan aims to identify the acoustic signatures of different vessel types and create an autonomous 24/7 maritime monitoring system. The technology could enhance Ireland’s and Europe’s ability to detect suspicious or “dark” vessels operating in territorial waters, strengthening maritime security and surveillance capabilities.

The exhibition showcases how Trinity researchers are developing innovative technologies with the potential to address major European challenges in cybersecurity, data protection and national security.
