Science Foundation Ireland welcomes the latest figures released on Horizon 2020 funding. The ADAPT Centre for Digital Content Technology has been successful in winning Trinity College Dublin’s largest ever Horizon 2020 win with two other research centres, AMBER and CONNECT. The postdoctoral programme named ‘Edge’, was awarded €6 million in Horizon 2020 funding and will employ over 70 outstanding ICT researchers. The project will focus predominantly on advancing research into materials, telecommunications networks and digital content technology.

The breakdown of funding saw over €172 million awarded to Higher Education Institutions and nearly €80 million going to companies, two thirds of which were SMEs. However, funding has also been awarded to programmes integrating academia and industry.

Professor Mark Ferguson, Director General of Science Foundation Ireland and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government said: “Science Foundation Ireland welcomes the news of Irish companies’ recent success in Horizon 2020. There is a misconception that Horizon 2020 is primarily for academia; there is actually more funding in it for industry. Science Foundation Ireland has a number of programmes in place to support bids for funding and continues to encourage Irish company and academic participation. I am delighted with the success we have seen to date and hope to significantly build upon these achievements from both academia and industry.”
