Research Ireland strategy to help deliver stronger, more resilient Ireland through research and innovation

03 March 2026

Yesterday, Research Ireland has unveiled its inaugural strategy, Curiosity, Capability, Competitiveness – Charting Ireland’s Research and Innovation Future 2026–2030, aimed at building a research and innovation ecosystem that drives prosperity, competitiveness, and societal impact.

The ambitious plan includes:

  • Strengthening Ireland’s research talent pipeline with 3,800 PhDs and 2,000 postdoctoral fellows
  • Supporting the creation of 50 active spin-out companies from Research Ireland-funded projects
  • Funding 150 awards in partnership with government departments to tackle societal challenges

Launching the strategy, Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD highlighted the importance of research and innovation as a national capability essential to Ireland’s prosperity. Minister James Lawless TD emphasised the strategy’s alignment with national priorities and its focus on talent, discovery, and impact.

Research Ireland CEO Dr. Diarmuid O’Brien said: “Research Ireland’s new strategy sets out a clear ambition – to support all disciplines towards building an internationally-renowned research and innovation system that delivers real outcomes for people, communities and enterprise.”

Also, featuring in the strategy was Dr Abeba Birhane, of the ADAPT Centre at TCD Computer Science and Statistics as part of a case study on the ‘Global Influence in the Mission for Accountability in AI‘. As Director of the AI Accountability Lab at ADAPT and Trinity College Dublin, Abeba and her team have since produced influential research on surveillance practices, secured EU funding to develop audit frameworks, and contributed to both national and global AI policy discussions.

This strategy marks a new phase for Ireland’s research landscape, harnessing curiosity-driven excellence to deliver tangible outcomes for communities, enterprise, and the nation
