ATHENA Webinar "From Promise to Practice: How Online Advertising Funds Misinformation Before and After the EU Code of Practice''


On 5 February, from 9 – 10 am, Emmanouil Papadogiannakis  will host a webinar exploring the impact of the EU’s Strengthened Code of Practice on Disinformation, which aims to cut off the advertising revenue that fuels online misinformation.

While the Code calls on advertisers to avoid funding deceptive content, recent research reveals a more complex reality. Despite some improvements, major advertising networks continue to place ads on high-traffic misinformation websites, allowing misleading content to remain profitable.

The findings show that while smaller, low-visibility sites have been largely excluded, well-known misinformation outlets still attract mainstream advertising and with it, credibility and financial support from household brands.

Drawing on an analysis of nearly 400 misinformation websites, this webinar will examine what has truly changed, what has not, and what this means for the future of disinformation policy in Europe.
