Eileen Culloty, ADAPT Academic and Associate Professor at Dublin City University, as well as, head of the Irish hub of the European Digital Media Observatory, recently told the Oireachtas AI committee that generative AI is “fundamentally unreliable” and threatening democratic debate.
Culloty argued that AI produces statistically plausible but not necessarily accurate information, undermining people’s reasoning and echoing the mistakes of 1990s tech deregulation. She warned that rushing AI into everyday life could have long-term consequences similar to those seen when tech deregulation became the norm in order to support innovation.
Newsbrands Ireland chair, Sammi Bourke, will also brief the committee on AI’s impact. Bourke will tell the committee that while publishers are not against AI, its use of online journalism without payment is placing quality journalism “under existential threat.”
