VIGILANT Showcased at European Commission Workshop on Defending Democracy

13 November 2025

Dr. Brendan Spillane, Assistant Professor at University College Dublin and Principal Investigator of the Horizon Europe VIGILANT project, presented the consortium’s latest research at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission’s 6th Annual Joint Research Centre Disinformation Workshop in Brussels.

The workshop, titled “Defending European Democracy,” gathered experts from EU institutions, academia, civil society, and international organisations to address Europe’s resilience to disinformation and the protection of information integrity ahead of the launch of the European Democracy Shield.

Speaking in the session “Showcasing EU-Funded Projects Supporting European Democracy,” moderated by Alberto Domini of DG Research and Innovation, Dr. Spillane outlined how VIGILANT and the related ATHENA project are developing AI-driven tools and ethical frameworks to help law enforcement detect, analyse, and investigate disinformation and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) campaigns.

VIGILANT brings together 17 European partners to create advanced systems that identify and interpret disinformation linked to criminal activity across major online platforms and multiple languages.
