The ADAPT Centre for Digital Content Technology, an SFI Research Centre, has been selected as the winner of the ‘Best Contribution to Data Science from an Academic Research Body’ at this year’s DatSci Awards.  The winning project focuses on a machine learning based solution that is capable of the discovery and extraction of information related to AI technologies.

Speaking about the win, Murhaf Hosari, a researcher at the ADAPT Centre, said: “We are delighted to be recognised for our state-of-the-art solution! Tracking developments in the highly dynamic data-technology landscape is vital for keeping up with novel technologies and tools, however before now nothing existed to help organisations discover these updates. Our AI powered solution will help users build the knowledge they need about these technologies, and predict the trends and sentiment around them.”

The tool gathers information related to novel technologies by observing text data in tech news articles and blogs. Extracting this information helps to gain insights about AI technologies on the market, and builds connections about how they interact or relate to each other.  This greatly helps users build the knowledge they need about these technologies, and predict the trends and sentiment around them.  The solution reduces the human time needed to peruse daily news articles in order to analyse top trends, simplifying the task of the analyst.

The DatSci Awards recognise the best and brightest Data Scientists in Ireland, one of the fastest growing sectors in Ireland.  Ten categories featured at this year’s awards, reflecting the wide range of contributions to data science.  The judging panel was made up of 27 Data Science professionals who reviewed each of this year’s applications over a series of three competitive stages; including a face-to-face presentation in order to determine the ten winners.
