Darwin & Goliath, an ADAPT spin-out company started by Professor Joeran Beel, Alan Griffin and Conor O’Shea, made it through to the final round of The Ireland Funds Business Plan Competition, which was organised by the NDRC (National Digital Research Centre). This competition seeks to foster creativity and develop appropriate entrepreneurial skills in early stage technology entrepreneurs based in Ireland..

Darwin & Goliath (D&G) offers custom-made recommender systems to small and medium sized enterprises, allowing them to offer their customers the best possible product recommendations with the least amount of effort. To do this they offer a recommender-system-as-a-service framework. D&G provides custom recommender services across a range of online domains including e-commerce, video streaming, and digital libraries.

The company focuses on a proprietary deep-learning approach to identify the best algorithm for each SME, to give customers superior product recommendations. Implementation of D&G’s services can increase sales, revenue and profits and allows improvement of both up-selling and cross-selling. Darwin & Goliath offers a particular advantage over other recommender systems, as it features a unique algorithm selection AI that has deep learning capabilities and selects the most appropriate recommendation algorithm for each SME.

The Ireland Funds Business Plan Competition offers ten businesses the opportunity not only to participate in a number of workshops and receive support and mentoring from the NDRC, but also the opportunity to pitch to investors and potentially win cash prizes and a place on a NDRC accelerator program.
