ADAPT researcher Dr Luca Longo, a lecturer in DIT School of Computing, has won this year’s National Teaching Hero Award.
Jointly run by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and the Union of Students in Ireland, this is the second round of these national awards designed to celebrate impactful teaching. The Teaching Hero campaign 2016 focused on innovative, creative and inspiring teaching and its impact on student learning. Dr Longo was selected from over 800 nominees and received his award at a ceremony in Dublin Castle on 27th October 2016.
Longo, originally from Varese, Italy, holds a masters degree in Computer Science from the University of Insubria, and a PhD from Trinity College Dublin. Speaking to Italian media outlet Corriere of his achievement, Luca spoke about his delight with the honor his students, who nominated him for this prestigious award, have awarded him. He also commented of his winning technique; always being available to respond to their requests or concerns, even if that means continuing their discussion after class.
As well as being an outstanding teacher, the thing that interests Dr Longo most is the fact that he gets to work and engage in ground-breaking research. Luca’s research focus within the ADAPT Centre is on Cognitive Load modelling employing novel deductive inference techniques (Defeasible reasoning + Argumentation Theory) and inductive Machine Learning computational techniques. Application fields for his research include HCI, Education, Medicine and AI.
